The JAE Perspective

Dear potential juniors, are you wondering how JC life is like in Eunoia? Are you worried about stepping into a JC which comprises a large number of IP students? Perhaps you may have concerns about fitting in or making friends?

If you have such doubts, look no further! In this EJC Press article, we reflect upon the issue of the JIP/JAE divide – is it as bad as it sounds on a few Reddit threads? Our senior, Dillon, gave his thoughts on this issue from the perspective of a JIP student. A year on, three Eunoians who joined EJ via JAE give you their accounts.

#WhyEJ

Like you, our JC2 Eunoians had to make a path for themselves. Find out why they made Eunoia their choice.

Coming to Eunoia was one of the best decisions I have ever made! Despite hailing from a school with a small proportion of students coming to EJ, EJ felt like home almost immediately when I was immersed in the vibrant community and welcoming environment during our Orientation.

In Eunoia, I was given the chance to pursue subjects of my interest, and that provided me with adequate space and time to delve deeper into the humanities subjects that I have always had interests in. All in all, coupled with the state-of-the-art facilities that one cannot find anywhere else nursed in nature, and the strong bond of students, Eunoia is truly a place I would like to call home.

Why Eunoia Junior College? This question has been asked by many people across the nation and I have an answer for it: because EJC is where students come together and create something big and impactful.

Through my one year here in EJC, I have witnessed a lot of big events happening; house events, conferences, and seminars. Now, most junior colleges have events that benefit students, but what separates EJC from the rest is the fact that these events are led by students. Eunoians are the ones that make these events possible. All of us come from different backgrounds, ethnicity and religion but we still are able to come to a common ground and acknowledge a sense of identity as Eunoians.

Eunoia is a place where students come together as one and create something that we individually cannot. We write a story together that will stick with us throughout our lives.

EJ has provided me with learning opportunities through platforms like deep dive days to see the world in a different lens. This was a great opportunity for me to listen to the stories and lived experiences of others, widening my views on social issues as well as learn from the personal experiences of others. In addition, EJ has provided me leadership opportunities: as a Student Councillor, I can do what I am passionate about, representing my peers and giving back to my college.

Alumni Voices

As a young school, we are proud to have our alumni speak sincerely about their experience in Eunoia. Read more in the interviews conducted by very own EJC Press!

“I think I began identifying firmly as a Eunoian after joining my class in J1 and I think throughout the year of stress and academic anxiety, ending the year off with Euphoria was one of the most heartwarming experiences. I think the school has put in place so many opportunities to grow and learn outside the confines of the curriculum and that’s something I really appreciated.”

Erica Wee, EJC Class of 2019, Alumna of Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School

“My time in Eunoia has certainly helped me grow as a person, both emotionally and intellectually. The focus on reflection, introspection, and metacognition has helped me become a thoughtful person who extracts knowledge from my experiences, before subsequently translating it into some form of action to achieve personal growth.”

Koh Hekang, EJC Class of 2018, Alumnus of Victoria School

“My time in EJ was filled with moments that not only made me genuinely happy but also planted various questions in my head. It made me think about what I wanted in my life, my definition of success, what makes me happy and at peace with myself, who I am and so on … I think my own answers to these questions are in flux, but my experience in EJ gave me the push I needed to pursue my passion and take some (calculated) risks. While not knowing what the future holds makes me anxious and fearful at times, there’s a kind of curiosity that has developed in me, wondering beyond what is and what my world could be.
